A few days ago Microsoft added a strange update for Windows Vista.

Update KB972036 which is available via Windows Update is called “August 2009 Update for Windows Vista”.

The update description shown when downloading reads:

Install this update to resolve issues with non-compatible applications for Windows Vista.

The relevant Knowledge Base article states that this update adds hard blocks for certain applications and one of the listed apps for block are Zune Software 4.0.

Here is what is said exactly:

(This Update) Adds a block for Microsoft Zune to prevent users from trying to upgrade Windows XP to Windows Vista for Zune 4.0.

Very strange indeed. We have very little clue as to what this means so if any of you know anything more please drop a comment!

  • I'm guessing that it's so Vista users don't install the XP version? I sure hope that the 4.0 software isn't XP-only

It wouldn't be XP-only, that'd be a massive backstep with Vista on most PC's now and Windows Seven right around the corner.

But maybe we'll see an XP-only version and this update prohibits installing the Vista / Seven version due to incompatibility? Hopefully the same features will be present in both if this is the case though.
