Today we’ve seen what we suspect is the first leaked image of the upcoming Zune Software – 4.0 which will release alongside the Zune HD. The image is being used as a twitter background by Dave McLauchlan (@DaveMacMS) who is a member of the Zune team.

This beautiful red Zune HD wallpaper was made by a friend of mine, who is a fellow Zuner, who posted it out via his twitter (@zunecards) using twitpic today. The full version is also available at 1920 × 1200 although if people are interested he will take other resolution requests too.

As Zune HD launch draws near along with it’s Zune Software 4.0 some new features were being hoped for. If you were hoping for Media Center DVR support, I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed. Today there have been reports that Microsoft been approaching successful iPhone developers and offering “a bucket of money”, to port popular apps over to Zune HD. Whether this is true or not is still unconfirmed but it does seem highly likely and would really help bridge the gap between Zune and iPod / iPhone.

The Zune HD is now available for pre-order in selected stores, prices and specs have been confirmed and the zune.net Zune HD page updated. The device prices are the same as previous rumours, at $219.99 for Zune HD 16gb and $289.99 for Zune HD 32gb and are now available to pre-order at Amazon.com, Best Buy, Wal-Mart and the Microsoft store.
